Left Eye of 26 Week Old Fetus
Computer generated image reconstructed from scanned human data. Actual size of fetus = 360 mm. This image presents a frontal view of the left eye of a 26-week-old fetus. The age is calculated from the day of fertilization. The pigmented left eye is partially open. The ridge-like markings around the eyes are the eyelids. During the 26th week of development, the fetus gains the ability to open its eyes while alert and close its eyes while sleeping. Eye color is usually blue, regardless of the permanent color, as pigmentation is not fully developed. Final formation of eye pigmentation requires exposure to light and usually occurs a few weeks after birth.
