Functions of the Kidneys

Kidneys tirelessly filter wastes from our blood. They also maintain salt and fluid balance and produce a hormone that triggers production of red blood cells in bone marrow.

As sensitive monitors of the body’s fluid balance, the kidneys help regulate blood pressure. They also monitor oxygen levels in the blood and, if they detect a deficit, release a hormone that triggers red blood cell production.
