The nucleus of the sperm, which contains 23 paternal chromosomes, is about to fuse with the nucleus of the ovum, which contains 23 maternal chromosomes, to restore the diploid number (46 chromosomes) therefore creating a diploid zygote. Once the fusion is complete, fertilization is complete.
