Shrunken Hippocampus

The hippocampus is part of the brain limbic system and helps to regulate emotion and to store and retrieve memories. It is located deep in the forebrain. People with depression often have a hippocampus that is reduced in size, similar to the shrinkage seen in victims of abuse and individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder. This shrinkage may explain why depressed individuals often have more difficulty processing and retaining information.
