CHAPTER 2

The Search for Balance

We are born with many natural mechanisms to help us maintain a stable environment within our bodies. The processes that regulate our body temperature, blood pressure and immune response are all good examples of how we are built to keep conditions relatively constant and balanced within. Your brain's hypothalamus commands most of these reactions to environmental factors or other challenges. The state of balance your body is constantly striving for is called homeostasis.
