CHAPTER 3

Watch a Kidney Transplant

Follow a team of top surgeons through each step of a real kidney transplant operation. The removal surgery is done using a laparoscope, a flexible tube with a camera at its end. View how a laparoscope is inserted into the donor’s abdomen through a small incision so the surgeon can operate while watching a monitor. You’ll actually see the inside of the donor’s abdomen as the surgeon removes his kidney. Watch as a large incision is made in the recipient in preparation for receiving his new kidney. Just one hour after it’s been removed, the donor kidney is ready for transplant. By the time the operation is over and the recipient is in the recovery room, his new kidney is already working.
