CHAPTER 39

Week 39

If, at 37 weeks of age, your baby seems less active, it's because there's almost no room to move in the uterus. The average birth weight for babies in the US is a little over 7 lbs (3,175 g), but healthy babies come in a range of weights, from 6 lbs to 10 or even 11 lbs! The lanugo has very likely disappeared from baby's body, although there may still be some in skin folds or on the back and shoulders. Any remaining lanugo will fall out shortly after birth. In boys, the testes may have descended into the scrotum completely, and in girls, the labia are prominent. The placenta is still supplying your baby with antibodies that will help fight infection for the first 6 months after birth.

At the end of pregnancy, your baby's brain is about a quarter of its eventual size and contains about 100 billion neurons--almost all the neurons it will ever have. Each of these neurons will link with as many as 200,000 other neurons, forming an incredibly intricate electrical network. The human brain is infinitely more complex than any computer ever created.
