CHAPTER 37

Week 37

Good news this week: if your baby weighs over 5 lbs, 8 oz (2,495 g), and if you finish this week of pregnancy, he will be considered full term. At full term, the soon-to-be newborn has enough fat stores to keep warm and won't require an incubator. His organs are ready to function on their own outside of the uterine environment. He's likely to be in the head-down position now, ready for the big exit, but whatever position he's assumed is probably the one he'll be in when you give birth.

Your baby has been listening and learning, even before birth! After he's born he'll know your voice and prefer it to any other. He'll also prefer songs and lullabies he's heard before birth to new ones. Amazingly, newborns can even distinguish prose passages heard during the last 6 weeks of pregnancy from new passages.
