CHAPTER 36

Week 36

You’re in the home stretch! Coming into the last month of pregnancy, your little newborn-to-be is putting on weight at the rate of about half a pound (227 grams) a week. Lanugo, the fine downy hair that has covered her body, continues to disappear. Her cheeks are getting plumper thanks to both accumulating fat and the development of powerful cheek muscles that will help your hungry baby to feed after birth.

Did you know that what you’re eating now will influence your baby’s tastes? Studies have shown that fetuses whose mothers who consumed anise (the herb that gives licorice its flavor) showed a liking for anise-flavored food after they were born. Fetuses whose mothers didn’t consume anise disliked the taste of anise after birth. So, who knows, it might just be worth your while to eat lots of Brussels sprouts and broccoli this month!
