CHAPTER 34

Week 34

You might not be feeling quite so much movement from your baby now, as this week the little one is not so little and may well have grown to an impressive 12" (30 cm) length, crown to rump, and weigh about 4 lb, 8 oz (2,100 g). There’s not much room in the womb! Your little angel is now urinating in equally impressive amounts: almost a pint a day, making urine an important component of the amniotic fluid, along with sweat and other bodily fluids. Fortunately, her urine is sterile, and the amniotic fluid is replaced every 3 hours. Fingernails typically reach the end of the finger by week 34, so she can now scratch herself.

Your baby may have settled into her head-down, ready-to-move-out position, and you might be able to feel the increased pressure of her head on your cervix. If she were born this week her chances of unimpaired survival would be excellent, as the lungs are almost fully mature and the immune system is well developed.
