CHAPTER 24

Week 24

It's amazing to think of how much your baby has developed! At week 22 she is about 8" (20 cm) from crown to rump and may weigh more than 1 lb, 5 oz (630 g). Her circulatory system continues to expand; the blood vessels of the lungs, in particular, are increasing their development. Your baby's tiny blood vessels can be seen through her skin, which is still transparent. All of her eye parts are developed, and she has a hand and startle reflex.

Your baby is already preparing to breathe outside of the womb. Her lungs have begun to produce surfactant, a substance that keeps the air sacs in the lungs from collapsing and sticking together when we exhale. In fact, with intensive medical care, some babies born in this week of development may be able to survive.
