CHAPTER 22

Week 22

At week 22, about 20 weeks since the day your baby was conceived, her limbs have now reached their final proportions—and your fetus at last looks like a miniature baby, not a cute little Martian! This week your baby’s length will be about 7.5" (19 cm), with a weight of almost 1 lb (460 g). Halfway through your pregnancy, your baby weighs only about a seventh or an eighth of what she will weigh at birth—there’s still a lot of growing to do.

In boys, the testes have begun to descend from the abdomen. In girls, the uterus and ovaries, complete with immature egg cells (4 million of them!) are in place, and the vagina has developed. Your baby is now covered with fine, downy hair called lanugo, which helps to hold the protective vernix in place. You can start interacting with your baby! She can now respond to rhythm and melody, so you can sing to her. If you continue to sing the same melodies, she’ll respond to them after she’s born.
