CHAPTER 20

Week 20

This is a red-letter week: you're halfway through your pregnancy! Your baby may be over 6" (16 cm) long from crown to rump and weigh more than 11 oz (320 g). If you haven't felt her movements yet, you are very likely to start feeling them now. You may be able to see your baby move this week, too, as ultrasound exams are typically scheduled at about this time. Her skin is now covered completely with waxy, cheesy-looking vernix. It may look unappealing, but the vernix not only protects baby's thin, delicate skin from the amniotic fluid and from abrasion, but also makes it easier for you to push her out at birth.

The placenta has reached now its maximum thickness. As baby continues to grow, there will be more and more pressure on your lungs, stomach, kidneys, and bladder. You're probably becoming shorter of breath as your growing baby crowds your lungs. Your belly button will become an "outie" now, if it wasn't before, as your uterus reaches the level of your navel.
