CHAPTER 19

Week 19

Your little one is grow, grow, growing and is now around 6" (15 cm) long and weighs about 9 oz (255 g). Neck and back muscles are developing and holding the head more erect as the bones of the spine, rib cage, and shoulders knit together and harden. Baby's skin is thin, loose, and wrinkled. It appears red because blood vessels can be seen through it.

In female fetuses, the way is already being paved for your grandchildren. The fallopian tubes are being fashioned from the ducts left behind by the first set of primitive kidneys, which are no longer needed and are degenerating. In other reproductive developments, the uterus and vagina are attaching, though the vagina is temporarily packed with a mass of cells. The vernix, a creamy white protective coating, is beginning to develop.
