CHAPTER 18

Week 18

Your baby now measures about 5.5" (14 cm) from crown to rump and weighs around 7 oz (200 g). She's not looking as top heavy as she did before: the growth of the head is slowing down compared to that of the rest of the body. From now until the last 2 months of pregnancy the fetus will be growing rapidly in length, with legs and torso lengthening more rapidly than the arms. The umbilical cord, too, is becoming longer and thicker to keep up with the increased needs of the fetus. With this all this expansion, space in your uterus is starting to get a little bit tight. Your baby can't move around quite as freely as she did before and will bend more and more into the classic fetal position as your pregnancy progresses.

As her senses of hearing and sight start to kick in, your baby is becoming more aware of her environment. Nerve endings from the brain are connecting to the ears, so that she's beginning to hear your heart beating, your stomach rumbling, and even loud noises outside of your body. Her retinas are now sensitive to brightness, and she may shield her eyes when exposed to strong light. Individual whorls, unique to your baby, have formed on her toes and fingers. Even identical twins have distinctly different fingerprints and toeprints.
