CHAPTER 13

Week 13

This week your baby-to-be's digestive system is in the news, with the stomach, liver, pancreas, and intestines all actively developing into their final and functional shapes. The fetus has been swimming in amniotic fluid for weeks, but now he "breathes" it as well. Your little one has also started urinating into the amniotic fluid--but don't worry, the urine won't hurt him. Most waste matter is quickly ushered out of the womb through the umbilical cord and across the placental membrane.

The nose and lips of the fetus are now completely formed. Inside the mouth, the jaws are hardening and are lined with tooth germs, the miniscule buds that will later become baby teeth. The vocal chords of the larynx (voice box) also begin to form, although not until it is born will the baby have an air supply to enable him to make sounds. External genitalia have developed enough to show whether your little one will be a boy or a girl.
