CHAPTER 11

Week 11

Week 11 is a milestone in the development of your little fetus, who now measures about 1.5-2" (3.8-5 cm) crown to rump, the size of a small plum. All major organs are present and vital body systems, like the circulatory, respiratory, and digestive systems, have been laid out. From this point on, development is mostly about growth and integration. Organs and systems must coordinate functions so that at the moment your baby leaves the protection of your body, amazingly, he will be able to eat, breathe, and circulate blood independently. The next 7 months will see incredible growth: your baby's weight will multiply up to 1,000 times. In just 3 weeks, from week 9 to week 12, the fetus will double in length.

In appearance, the most noticeable change in the fetus is in stature. Every day he's looking more human, back straighter, abdomen more tucked. The head is still very large compared with the rest of the body, and now there's a noticeable neck. The skin is thickening and becoming less transparent--hair follicles are even forming under the surface! Tiny fingernails and toenails have begun to grow, too.
